- Glittering parade of 175 cars wows crowds to celebrate Ford Mustang's 50th birthday
- Record collection of ‘Pony Cars’ joined by Mustang P51 air display
- Mustang Celebration Races include a record 30 Mustangs
The special Ford Mustang parade – supported by Pure Michigan – to celebrate the legendary model’s 50th birthday took place in front of a huge crowd at a sunny Silverstone Classic earlier today (26 July). Sights and sounds were enjoyed both on-track and in the sky as the Mustang P51 air display ran simultaneously to the stunning parade of iconic machines.
The biggest ever gathering of the ‘Pony Car’ is on show at the Classic this weekend, many of which took part in the glittering cavalcade, but that’s far from the end of the anniversary celebrations.
In-field displays featuring hundreds of models spanning all 50 years of the Mustang including legendary machines from movies such as Gone in 60 Seconds, American Gangster and Bullitt are on show throughout the weekend, as is the all-new 2015 Mustang.
Pure Michigan – the US State’s official travel and tourism division – is also supporting a large number of other outstanding birthday party festivities including dedicated displays, muscle car races, live music from Motown tribute band Singed, Sealed and Delivered and the aforementioned Mustang P51 air displays.
The on-track action won’t all be run at a leisurely pace, however, as two thundering Mustang Celebration Races Proudly Presented by Pure Michigan take place across the weekend. Both superb showdowns boast capacity 58-car grids including a record 30 race-prepared Mustangs. The packed line-up includes some illustrious Shelby GT350s as well as former F1 driver and Le Mans winner Jackie Oliver.
Mark Hayden, Anniversary Event Organiser of the Mustang Owners Club GB, said: “We wanted a location for our 50th anniversary that would have appeal for our 1400 members and the Silverstone Classic was the obvious choice because of its timing, central location and wide range of attractions. It also needed to appeal to Ford who are presenting their 2015 Mustang at our celebration. We are looking forward to the track parade, the Mustang races and our anniversary party on Saturday night. 250 Mustangs are expected over the weekend making it the biggest gathering in Europe.”
