Celebrity Challenge Trophy Race

Format

This year's Silverstone Classic saw a star-studded line-up of celebrity drivers taking to the track for the Celebrity Challenge Trophy Race to race flat-out in a huge grid of Austin A30s and A35s (well-known cars in classic racing circles, introduced a few years ago by the Historic Racing Drivers Club as a cost-effective route into historic racing).

The celebrities were split into five teams representing their professions as follows:

  • Bike Legends
  • Going for Gold
  • Screen Stars
  • Rocking & Racing
  • SKY Sports Stars

The race programme for the grid over the weekend of the Classic was split into two parts; owners of the cars qualified on Friday and raced on Sunday while the celebrities, together with their team captains, were in action on Saturday.

All celebrities without an MSA race licence were put through their paces at the Silverstone Motorsport Academy, one of the country’s leading Association of Racing Drivers Schools (ARDS).

Scoring

26 cars competed with the winning driver scoring 26 points, 2nd place scoring 25 points, 3rd place scoring 24 points and so on – wherever a car finished its driver scored the appropriate number of points for their team; and the top three points for each team counted for their team results! There was also a podium award for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd non-professional celebrity to finish.

Each celebrity team were in with a chance to win the charity prize fund of at least £10,000 for Prostate Cancer UK as the official chosen charity of the Silverstone Classic.

Results

Full details of the race results can be found here.

The non-professional celebrity results were:

  1. Neil Primrose
  2. Tony Jardine
  3. Jason Jenny

The winning celebrity team on Saturday were Screen Stars, but taking into account the combined owner/ celebrity result, the overall winning team of the weekend was Bike Legends!
