Race Descriptions / Grid

The Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy for Historic Cars

Race Start Time: .
Length : 1 x 60 mins

Not the usual historic FIA GT suspects, but an exciting, eclectic grid of early 1960s racers will battle it out on track at the Silverstone Classic in July. The pre-'63 GT race, brainchild of racer Ben Cussons, is symbolic of the Silverstone Classic's effort to showcase original race cars on a level-playing field rather than in a more traditional FIA context of combined pre-'66 classes. Participation is by invitation only to GT cars built and homologated before January 1 1963, from Short Wheel Base Ferraris to Aston Martin Zagatos, all models which were built to be driven on the road and raced on the track. Observance to period homologation rules will be strict, as the grid welcomes pre-'63 models which were competitive in their time but whose performance may not be suitable for more 'modern' historic racing.
Among the entries accepted so far are two of the rarest and most famous Aston Martins: the lightweight chassis ex-Equipe Endeavour DB4GT, which won its first race at Goodwood with Stirling Moss at the wheel in 1960, and a Project DP212 which raced at Le Mans in 1962.

MRL RAC Woodcote Trophy

Race Start Time: .
Length : 1 x 60 mins

In 2006, the Royal Automobile Club and Motor Racing Legends proudly announced the launch of a new European historic race series. Called the Royal Automobile Club Woodcote Trophy, the series is for genuine sports-racers of the post-War era, up to and including December 1955. Organised and managed by Motor Racing Legends, the races are at least one hour long, for two drivers, and held at premier historic race meetings.

Commented the then Royal Automobile Club Chairman, Tim Keown, The Club's rich motorsport heritage lives on today through our ties to such high-calibre events as the London to Brighton veteran car run, the Tourist Trophy (now awarded to winners of the British round of the FIA GT Championship) and, from 2006, this new series for Fifties sports cars to be run by Motor Racing Legends.
The Woodcote Trophy actively encourages the highest possible driving standards, with cars running to period specification.
The Royal Automobile Club Woodcote Trophy, now in its fifth year, will welcome the usual mouthwatering mix from the 1950s: 300S Maseratis, OSCAs and Ferrari Monzas, through to Aston Martin DB3/S, Frazer Nash, Gordini, Cooper, Connaught and, of course, C- and D-type Jaguars. Then there are HWMs, Allards, Austin-Healeys, DB2 and DB3 Astons, XK120 and 140 Jaguars and even some Triumphs. Again, as with all Motor Racing Legends races, the emphasis is on strict adherence to genuine, period specifications.

U2TC

Race Start Time: .
Length : 1 x 60 mins

Between the years of 1963, when the European Touring car Championship ran for the first time, and 1965, Touring Car stars, such as Whitmore, Hahne, Rhodes, Shoemaker, Fitzpatrick and Sears, were joined on the grid by almost all the well known, and some yet to become well-known drivers and personalities who took at shot at what was then a hot new series: Jacky Ickx (BMW 700S, Lotus Cortina); Jo Siffert (Chevy Impala); Brabham; Hulme; Chris Craft (Ford Anglia at Monza); Hans Hermann, Jochen Neerpasch; Roy Salvadori; Chris Amon (Sunbeam Rapier); Rauno Altonen (970 Mini);Timo MÃkinen; Chris Lawrence; Henry Taylor, Les Leston, famous motoring photographer Denise McCluggage (Mini Cooper); not to mention de Adamich, Facetti or Alan Mann.
The idea behind Historic Motor Racing News U2TC is to be faithful to the roots of International Touring Car racing. The series is only for cars that adhere strictly to period specification.  Although many of the participants own and drive several other racing cars, they support U2TC for the sportsmanship within the grid. With fairly evenly matched cars and high levels of race tuning and preparation as part of the winning strategy, U2TC is one of the most competitive series in historic racing today. These are two-driver races of a minimum of one hour at venues such as Brands Hatch, Monza, Dijon, Spa, and of course, Silverstone. This International series boasts several European Touring and GT Champions amongst its drivers, such as Austrian Dieter Karl Anton, and Swedish Bo Warmenius. It is also the favourite series of ex-F1 driver and ex-Arrows team owner, Jackie Oliver, while Indianapolis champion Bobby Rahal is also often seen on the U2TC grid.U2TC also attracts many of the stars of historic racing, such as Jon Minshaw (of Deemon Tweeks fame), Leo Voyazides, Martin Stretton, race preparer Rob Hall, journalist Andrew Frankel, Mikael Gustavsson, so the competition at the sharp end is fierce. Look out for a team of BMW 1800s, run by Richard Shaw, who runs no fewer than eight cars for drivers in the series.  These include the pairing of Marcus Mahy and Travis drummer Neil Primrose, Le Mans series contenders Mick and Sean McInerney, Martin Hines of Zip Kart fame, and Shaw himself paired with Jackie Oliver. The Alfa Romeo GTA contingent is just as numerous, with the factory-backed Scuderia del Portello fielding a team headed by Scuderia boss Marco Cajani driving with Italian ace Arturo Merzario. Cars are selected that not only would have been found on the grid from 1963 to 1965, but that look like the cars of the period and perform similarly. The grid is recognisable as a Championship Touring Car grid of the period, which means, amongst other things, limited advertising on the cars. Though the V8 cars have subsequently become popular amongst historic racers, there were few of them and they were not the winners in International Touring Car races before

Formula Junior

Length : 2 x 20 mins

Back in the 1960™s, the pack of Formula Juniors would stream nose to tail through Woodcote, lap after lap; in 2009, the phenomenon was repeated as a 13 car train, albeit headed comfortably by the superbly driven Cooper of Jon Milicevic, enthralled the crowd, reliving the excitement of the period. Historic Formula Junior™ was the first Formula to become Historic, when it was established as an independent Championship in 1976, and this opened the gateway to historic racing as we all know it today. This year, again, we will see another ding dong battle as the Lotus 27™s of Urs Eberhardt and Mike Hibberd pit against the Brabham BT6™s of Pierre Tonetti and Chris Drake “ but watch for F3 rising star and 2010 Autosport Awards Winner Callum McLeod in his works™ Caravelle -a black horse if any, and Sir John Chisholm, handling his Mk3A Gemin

Length : 1 x 25 min

Historic Sports Car Club Road SportsCravats, Cloth Caps, ladies in short dresses with the hair tied under scarves, welcome to the era of the 60 and 70s when European sports cars ruled the road.
This race epitomises the true spirit of Historic racing with Classic marques raced in almost showroom condition. Tight regulations ensure these cars are very close to road going specification, all MOT'd and on Road Tyres. Don't be fooled when the red lights go out, these boys and girls will be racing. These are the cars you will have owned, desired, laboured over in cramped garages, and serviced at the side of the road. Represented will be the great marques, Alfa Romeo, Ginetta, Jaguar, Lancia, Lotus, MG, Morgan, Porsche, Triumph and TVR, along with the not so well known cars, like Fairthorpe, Milano and Turner. MRL The Sir Stirling Moss Trophy for 50's Sports Cars

Race Start Time: .
Length : 1 x 60 mins

The aim is to offer the most authentic historic motor racing possible, with longer, two-driver races at high-profile meetings.
